In March 2014 South Melbourne Market installed the SmartMeter Utility Management Solution (Watersave SUMS) from Watersave Australia. The objectives were to monitor water consumption for accurate water reporting, to improve building and operational efficiencies and lastly to show a real commitment to sustainability. To date 14 x Watersave SmartMeters have been installed to identify where and when water is used.
“Watersave SUMS highlighted several areas of high usage immediately on installation and fast rectification work and improved water management soon resulted in savings of 20,000 litres of water per day. This new focus on water management at South Melbourne Markets has helped the City of Port Phillip to save an impressive 7,095,600 million litres of water over a 12 month period translating to a cost saving of $34,000. Further sub-metering is planned at the market for individual store holders to introduce a more focused user-pays model in the future. The aim is to continue with sound water management to facilitate additional water savings in the future.”
